Thing 21: Taking the Lead: Connecting With Your Stakeholders

Advocacy and marketing for your library are one of the most important things that you can do if you are a librarian, or a School Media Specialist! The library is the center of the school and whatever you can do to promote the library, the better! The library in my building is used by all students and almost all of the faculty on a daily basis for anything from lessons, research, a spot to hang out and read and even just a place to come and share new ideas. Without the library students and teachers would be missing out on so much and making sure this message gets out to everyone in the community is one of the best things you can do for your library.

In my library right now I always try to go above and beyond and advocate for my library even if I seem to be repetitive. My website is the first place I go to share with the world what we are doing. It is a place where anyone can go and find information on not only the rules of the library, and the online catalog but it is also a place where students can learn more information about me and what books I am reading and so forth. They can see examples of student work and see projects that students have spent weeks completing. I also have my Twitter page linked to my webpage so that it is easily accessible. Twitter is another tool I use to advocate for my library and I have really this year taken off with using it. It is a great way to promote what you have going on in a quick way and since so many people use social media to stay connected they have access to it. I also try to take part in any community events that happen and always spread the word of what is happening in my library.

I always like to attend professional development training's as well but I think there is always room for doing more and getting my name out there to as many people as I can. If I wanted to amp up my outreach and advocacy I think that this would be one of the best things that I could do. Any help would be much appreciated and things seem to spread by word of mouth quicker than anything else does! I really loved the 10 ways to librarians can be a marketing genius like Lady Gaga! It was by far my favorite article that  I read I agreed with everything The Daring Librarian had to say J Having an opinion and being passionate are so important when it comes to promoting your library and being different in a way that will set you apart from the rest!

  1. Sounds like you're doing a lot to make the library program visible and known!
